Water sports activities on the Marine Lake, Southport
It’s time to take to the water! Sailing, paddleboarding, and lots more.
The Marine Lake is an playground for water sports enthusiasts situated between Southport town centre and the beach.
There’s no better feeling than taking to the water on an early morning or summer weekend. Blue water below, panoramic skies above. The gentle coastal breeze slowly healing your soul.
The shallow waters of the mile-long lake are the perfect setting for a variety of activities including sailing, boating, and stand-up paddleboarding.
Since the 19th century, people have been drawn to the Marine Lake (and the adjacent Kings Gardens) to indulge in playful pursuits
Today, it’s home to a group of clubs and organisations that offer a variety of water sports activities. It’s the perfect place for new beginners to find their sea legs, or for seasoned pros to enjoy the waves.

Sailing
Sailing is arguably the best way to enjoy the Marine Lake. The sport offers a chance to learn new skills, meet great people, and have plenty of fun on the water.
Luckily, there are two neighbouring clubs ready to help you start your sailing adventure.
West Lancashire Yacht Club (WYLC) are known to many as the hosts of the annual 24-Hour Race. Sailing clubs from across the UK descend on Southport for a gruelling test of skill and endurance. Coastal winds and colourful sails make for an incredible spectacle.
Outside of the race, the Yacht Club offer a variety of activities that include dinghy sailing and racing. Taster sessions, open days, and community events are held throughout the year.
Similarly, Southport Sailing Club provide a packed calendar of competitive races and social sailing. There’s also training courses suitable for both juniors and adults available throughout the year.
The sunset sail and BBQ events are a great way to socialise and spend some time on the water.
Scouts
Waterside Lodge is the headquarters of Sefton North Scouts HQ. The activity centre sits beside the lake and provides a place for a range of activities both on and off the water.
Water sports offered include sailing, canoeing, raft building, dragon and bell boating.
The Lodge is a welcoming and inclusive space where young people can enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities.
Rowing
The Marine Lake is home to Southport Rowing Club, who meet twice a week for a recreational row.
The club’s experienced coaches run courses throughout the year. Perfect for new starters who want to try out a new water-based activity.
