How Southport shapes Ruth Ryder's art
The creations of Ruth Ryder (aka Ruthie Illustrations) have become the focus of much local interest in recent years.
The Southport-based illustrator and graphic designer takes inspiration from the urban landscape of the town, recreating Southport’s iconic boulevards and landmarks in her own signature style.
Ruth’s artworks feature depictions of The Grand, the Marine Lake, and the eclectic facades of Lord Street.
The inside of her much-loved illustrated book states that her art ‘celebrates the towns rich history and bold beginnings. Southport is a town to be celebrated.’
“I love drawing buildings and I’m really inspired by the architecture in Southport. I add a little bit of nostalgia to my artwork and each piece is vibrant and colourful.
“I look at the history of the buildings and that’s what inspires my work. The time they were built. The people that built them. What they were originally built for.”

"The scenery and architecture in Southport inspires my artwork."
Ruth works out of The Engine Room alongside a growing cohort of creatives and entrepreneurs.
The co-working and co-learning project, based in the grade II listed Wayfarers Arcade, provides a hub for creative and digital enterprise.
Ruth’s Engine Room colleagues and collaborators include fellow artists, a book cover designer, and interior designers.
“We have the most amazing creative people coming together at The Engine Room.
“There’s so much going on; workshops, art clubs, events, music nights. The café has just opened, serving amazing coffee and hot chocolate.”
Ruth also hosts a number of regular events at The Engine Room for artists of all skill levels.
There’s the Heritage Drawing Workshop, which takes inspiration from Wayfarers Arcade, and the Homeschoolers Art Club, where people can “have fun, learn new art techniques, and make some friends.”
Ruth is excited by the growing arts and culture scene in the town centre and is a regular visitor to The Atkinson for memorable family days out.
“The Southport community is really pulling together and there is such a positive vibe here right now. It’s great to come and work in the town centre.”
Ruth’s gifts and artworks (which include books, calendars, and cards) can be found in The Atkinson Gift Shop, Waterstones Southport, and The Engine Room.
