Lord Street in Bloom garden volunteers

The volunteer group that helps Southport blossom.

Lord Street in Southport is renowned for verandas and Victoria architecture, yet it’s the lush gardens that bring a splash of colour to the town’s mile-long boulevard.

The passionate volunteers of Lord Street in Bloom are responsible for planting and maintaining in many areas of town centre, including the Town Hall Gardens, Lord Street Gardens, and the Memorial Gardens that neighbour the cenotaph.

The green-fingered community group meet weekly to work on the gardens; giving up their own time to ensure Lord Street looks vibrant and attractive.

This team is led by local hotelier Pauline Morris, who is supported by colleagues Sharon Gregory-Wareing and Helen Marshall.

Pauline says: “We do it because we love to do it.  We care; that’s the main thing.”

As well as the Gardens, Lord Street in Bloom look after 82 stone urns and the floral displays on the Promenade roundabout.

It’s an incredible effort from a small group that is solely reliant of donations.

Funds are used to purchase bulbs and plants to keep the gardens looking pristine. Southport BID and ASDA support the group on an ongoing basis, with organisations like the Hotels Association and Rotary Club of Southport also making financial contributions.

The team (of less than 20 people) are always on the lookout for new members to join in with the initiative.  People of all ages and skills levels are members and there is no expectations on those who wish to help out in any shape or form.

Donations are just as welcome and any support is appreciated by the group.
