The Bijou : Southport's independent cinema

A community arts hub that offers more than just movies

Southport Bijou Cinema is an independent, non-profit cinema and arts hub in the heart of Southport town centre.

The indie picture house hosts affordable daily showings of modern masterpieces, golden-age classics, world cinema, and family-friendly flicks.

Live music and arts events such as interactive theatre and comedy nights also take place regularly.

Though The Bijou is much more than just a cinema.  You may come for the movies, but you’ll no doubt return due to the people you happen to meet.

Manager Andy Harrison, alongside colleagues Phil Pierce and Lewis Simpson, are commitment to providing a multi-faceted space where like-minded people can come together and celebrate culture.

The cinema first opened in 2019 led by founder Mike Lockwood, who was spurred on by a passion for arthouse cinema.  Mike sadly passed away in 2021, but Andy and the team continue to carry the torch.

Andy says: “We’re delighted with the ongoing support we receive from the people of Southport who have bought into Mike’s vision for a community space that celebrates visual arts.

“We try to offer a mix of cult classic and newer films that might not make it to the bigger cinemas.”

Not even on-screen stars can compete with the Bijou in terms of awards.  The venue took home the Liverpool City Region Hidden Gem award in 2022 and achieved the Community Impact award at Merseyside Independent Business Awards in 2023. Andy and the team came out on top in their category on two occasions at the Your Southport Stars Awards too.

After the films are finished, patrons often gather in the Bijou’s bar for a post-credits catch up.  They stock a wide range of spirits, wines, as well as beers from Southport brewery.  This will occasionally spill over to a visit to neighbouring pub The Masons Arms.

The Bijou is tucked away on Post Office Avenue, just off Lord Street and only minutes away from Southport train station.  Restaurants The Office and Landsdowne Bistro are also located close by if the mood strikes.
