Southport: A Coastal Hub of Opportunity

Southport is a town which offers health and quality of life benefits that other places cannot.

Southport is on the coast, with visitor attractions and a wide range of hospitality offerings. Yet Southport also offers business parks, major new housing developments and opportunities for investment in town centre living and working.

Southport's fresh air and green environment encourages and rewards work/life balance in a way other places can only dream of.

In terms of leisure time, Southport is home to 6 golf courses including Royal Birkdale, home of the Open. Southport is also within easy reach of both Liverpool and Everton Premier League football clubs as well as Aintree Racecourse, home of the famous Grand National horse race.

Southport's location makes it easy to reach Liverpool, Manchester and beyond in terms of both commuting and distribution of goods/services.

Entrepreneurs have targeted the town in recent years. Gaming businesses are based in the town while conducting business around the globe. Marketing businesses have chosen the town centre over the cities of Liverpool or Manchester. Why? Because of the blend of quality of life, a range of high-quality housing for all ages and high-grade education offerings with a highly competitive cost base in terms of both skilled labour and property costs.

Southport is also developing Enterprise Arcade in the very heart of the town centre to encourage even more small business start-ups in the town. Firms interested to date are from the digital and innovation/technology sectors, strengthening the town centre economy even further.

Southport’s population has grown in recent years reflecting the growth in new housing developments around the town. Lord St is the proud centrepiece of the town centre- a 1-mile long boulevard of shops, eateries, hotels and independent shops. Lord St is fast becoming a location of choice for town centre living as well. Development schemes include the Garrick- an exciting redevelopment of an art deco former theatre to form residential apartments, a new 100-bedroom hotel and associated retail/services.

Once a town where older people chose to retire, Southport’s night -time economy and music scene reflects the emergence of a younger more dynamic market. Yet because of its quality of life, Southport also remains a destination of choice for raising young families. The average property price in Southport is £236,838 (Home.co.uk January 2025) compared to £268,000 for the UK as whole (UK House Price Index February 2025) making it an affordable as well as desirable place to invest in property.

New leisure attractions are also boosting Southport’s economy.

Adventure Coast – a major theme park on the edge of the town centre- continues to re-invest in the day attraction sector, opening new rides and amenities such as the Viking themed mini-golf centre.

The Cove Southport, a major international class “surfing resort”, comprising a hotel, and associated leisure uses as well as innovative surfing facilities is in the formal planning application stage.

Southport’s hospitality sector continues to thrive. And the evening and night-time economies are also constantly improving.

The £75m Marine Lake Events Centre development is on site and scheduled to open in 2027. MLEC will provide a venue for entertainment, concerts, touring theatre, conferences and exhibitions as well as a unique water and light display. Together these will boost the visitor economy of the town considerably as well as generating more overnight stays in the town centre, helping to stimulate demand for new hotel investment.

As part of Liverpool City Region, Southport offers easy access to qualified and skilled young people, many of whom have been educated in one or more of the conurbation’s 4 major Universities. As well as graduates, Southport boasts its own highly-regarded Further Education College and a number of excellent schools as assessed by independent government inspectors.

Liverpool City Region boasts competitive economic advantage in sectors including biotechnology, life sciences, health, AI and advanced manufacturing.

Southport also benefits from access to the Liverpool City Region Connects infrastructure offering ultra-fast, reliable, secure but cost-effective full fibre broadband direct to the doors of your business and your house. The LCR Connects network links key digital assets such as data centres with “landing stations” for continental and intercontinental connections.
