Independent Italian restaurants in Southport
Southport town centre has never been short of top-quality Italian food.
Our independent Italians are well known for warm and welcoming hospitality. Many have provided memorable evenings for generations of local families.
Nowadays, there’s a combination of long-standing favourites and up and coming new venues.
Here's a summary of some of the best independent Italian restaurants in Southport, perfect for food lovers seeking authentic flavours and memorable meals in a range of formal and more relaxed settings.
Gusto Trattoria
Set back off Lord Street, Gusto has the habit of stopping hungry passers-by in their tracks with irresistible aromas.
The corner restaurant has served up freshly cooked Italian food in Southport since 2005. Today, you’ll choose from a tasty menu of wood-fired pizzas, pastas, and delectable salads. All diets are extremely well catered for, with vegetarian and plant-based options both having dedicated space on the Trattoria’s menu.
Top tip: Make sure to check out the specials board, on which you will often find creamy risottos and fresh fish dishes.

Volare
The third-generation family restaurant where everyone is met with a smile.
The pizza and pasta options are as equally tasty as they are abundant, but any regular patron will rightly tell you that Volare shines with its meat and fish dishes. You’ll have plenty of Veal specialities to choose from, if that’s your sort of thing. Poached Asparagus for starter is also an absolute must.
The last few years have seen the ever-popular restaurant go from strength to strength. 2023 saw the team move to a stunning a new space (albeit only a few doors down). In recognition of this hard work, the public then voted for Volare as their ‘Restaurant of the Year’ in both the 2024 and 2025 Your Southport Stars Awards.
Top tip: Keep a look out for one of Volare’s ever-popular wine tasting nights.
Pizzeria Mamma Mia
Mamma Mia's is a stalwart of the Southport restaurant scene. This family restaurant has been serving up Italian and Sardinian dishes to the people to of Southport for over 40 years.
Pizzas are aplenty and all the classic mains are covered, but we never look pasta Pasta during a visit to Mamma Mias. The Sardinian-style Gnochetti El Ragu Pecorino is a meaty, cheesy delight.
Top tip: Book early on weekends as tables (understandably) fill up quickly.

There’s a couple of options at Southport Market if you find yourself craving an Italian food fix.
